Heavy army deployment following gunfire exchange between Arsal, Labweh

The Lebanese Armed Forces heavily deployed on Thursday in the areas of al-Labweh and Arsal after residents of both towns exchanged gunfire.

The military deployed after gunmen from the Sunni town of Arsal opened fire on residents of al-Labweh, drawing retaliatory fire, the state-run National News Agency reported.

In this context, al-Labweh Mayor Ramez Amhaz told LBCI that the town’s residents called on judiciary to perform its duties, stressing the need to preserve peace in the region.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam held a meeting at his residence in Msaytbeh with a delegation of Arsal's figures under the chairmanship of Sheikh Samih Ezzeddine.

For his part, Sheikh Samih briefed Salam on the incidents taking place in the town and the surrounding areas, stressing the need to quell the situation.

Tensions run high in Lebanon due to sectarian conflicts, which were exacerbated by the two-year-old Syrian war.

On the 16th of June, four citizens were shot dead in the region of Wadi Rafeq which is located between the bordering outskirts of al-Qaa and Ras Baalbeck.

The citizens were identified as Ali Karameh Jaafar, Mohammad Ali Ahmad Jaafar, Hassan Shireif Amhaz, and another citizen from Al-Oglu. In the details, sources told LBCI that unknown assailants ambushed and killed the 4 citizens in the Wadi Rafeq region.
