Army Command calls on Lebanese citizens to avoid sectarian conflicts

The Army Command called on Lebanese citizens to ease tension and to avoid sectarian conflicts, stressing that it will strike with an iron fist all those who compromise the military forces' safety.

In this regard, the Army Command issued a statement on Friday whereby it announced that following the security incidents that took place yesterday in the areas of al-Labweh and Arsal, tensions erupted later on in the Bekaa, the North and Beirut as protesters blocked several roads with burning tires.

The Command also pointed out that gunmen opened fire at numerous Army patrols and checkpoints in the regions of al-Masnaa, Saadnayel, Tirbil, Arab al-Faour, Qob Elias and Majdal Anjar. Thus, the Lebanese Armed Forces responded to sources of fire, leaving a number of the assailants injured.

In this context, four LAF soldiers, including an officer, were wounded while military vehicles sustained material damages.

The Army Command also noted that the LAF units managed overnight to re-open most of the roads that were blocked earlier.

It added that the LAF undertook several raids in order to arrest the assailants, noting that they managed to detain 22 persons.
