5 Kurdish rebels killed in Turkey
Authorities say troops have killed five Kurdish rebels in a shootout in southeast Turkey.

The governor's office in southeastern Batman province says the rebels were killed in a clash near the town of Kozluk on Friday.

Fighting for autonomy by the Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The group is labeled a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States.

Turkey has granted more cultural rights to the Kurdish minority such as broadcasts in the once-banned Kurdish language in a failed effort at reconciliation.

The rebels and the country's Kurdish political movement insist on autonomy and Kurdish education in schools, which Turkey fears could divide the country along ethnic lines.
