Minister Mashnouq: Naameh landfill to be closed on July 17
Minister of Environment Mohammed Mashnouq said on Tuesday that the Naameh landfill, which is located in the Shouf district south of Beirut, will be closed on July 17.

Mashnouq’s comments were made during a meeting with the coalition of municipalities concerned with the closure of the landfill that will be converted into a garden and electricity will be generated from it to neighboring towns.

Mashnouq also revealed that tenders for the project will start on May 26.

In January, the cabinet decided to postpone the closure of the landfill for three months, drawing the ire of Naameh’s residents.

The government approved the controversial decision after a heated debate for several months concerning lebanon’s plan to treat solid waste.
