REPORT: Patriarch Rai from Batroun: We call lawmakers to elect a made in Lebanon president
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai urged on Saturday politicians to descend from their thrones and engage in compromises to put an end for the presidential vacuum as they are failing a community, a history and a whole country.

“Lebanon is passing through delicate situations and undergoing decay amid the persistent presidential vacuum,” Rai said during a tour in the northern region of Batroun.

He called on Lebanese rivals to assume their national responsibilities and elect a new president, saying: “You need to have the courage, responsibilities and free will to find a common ground for the crisis.”

“We want a made-in-Lebanon president, who is consensual and wise,” Rai concluded by saying.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since last May when the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended without the election of a successor.

The presidential vacuum is having a negative repercussion on the cabinet and the parliament as the state is threatened with further crises over ongoing disputes between the rival parties.

The parliament has failed 23 times to obtain the two-thirds quorum required to hold an election session.
