The British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Middle East and North Africa expressed his alarm on Tuesday about the rally that turned violent in central Beirut on Sunday and which left many participants wounded. In this regard, the British official called for comprehensive investigations aimed at holding accountable all involved parties. “I was deeply concerned about the confrontations that had erupted during the weekend in Lebanon,” the minister said in a statement, reiterating his support to the protection of peaceful demonstrations. The official emphasized that the United Kingdom fully supports the efforts exerted by Prime Minister Tammam Salam in a bid to reach political consensus. The official called upon all political parties in Lebanon to cooperate in order to serve the better interest of the people, urging them to leave their political differences a aside and tackle the country’s current crisis. Massive demonstrations launched by environmental anti-corruption activists, “You Stink”, kicked off on Saturday (August 22) evening to protest the government’s failure to resolve the waste management crisis. During the protest, scuffles erupted between protesters and security forces, leaving several injured from both parties. Similar confrontations broke out on Sunday (August 23) between security forces and several protesters described by organizers of the "You Stink" movement as "infiltrators".
