REPORT: Akkar activists protest transportation of trash to Srar
Activists from "Akkar is not a Garbage Dump" campaign staged a sit-in on Sunday in Halba’s square to voice rejection to the transportation of waste to Akkar.

MP Khaled Daher took part in the protest along with civil society activists and the residents of neighboring towns.

MP Daher said that they will prevent garbage trucks from entering the area.

Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill.

The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site would be found, however failed to live up to its promises.

The piles of garbage rotting in the summer heat triggered nationwide outrage and serious health warnings.

Following the closure of the landfill, civil society activists have been staging protests that grew into a popular uprising against the political class that has dominated the country since its civil war ended in 1990.
