Islamist inmates at Roumieh prison suspend hunger strike

Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi tasked his legal advisor Judge Mohammad Saab with visiting Roumeih prison to meet with a committee of Islamist inmates and detainees in Bloc “B”, in the presence of head of the Mitigating Circumstances Committee, Judge Hamza Charafeddine, the advisor of Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq for prison affairs Brig. Gen. Munir Shaaban, Brig. Gen. George Elias and Colonel Mohammed Al-Dasouqi.

The meeting lasted for three hours, during which Judge Saab and Grig. Gen. Shaaban received from the inmates committee a list of demands, as the committee’s members expressed their outrage towards the release of former Minister Michel Samaha and noted that “it has become clear that justice in Lebanon is selective and lacks unified criteria.”

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to suspend the open-ended hunger strike in order to allow the justice and interior ministers to look into the demands.
