Jumblatt: Division kicked off in Syria, will it reach Turkey?

Head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt said Friday that Syria’s division started with the Kurds declaring federal region in northern Syria, stressing that the Syrian regime is the only one to blame since the beginning of the peaceful uprising, to the start of oppression practices and killings, then destruction and displacement, leading the country to its current situation.

In tweets posted on his Twitter account, Jumblatt said that “the Syrian regime’s slogan was 'either us or them, even if it costs a million lives,' as Mohammad Nassif once said."

“After years of deadly civil war, world powers like the US and Russia entered the conflict to reconsider the Syrian unity,” he stated, adding that “as if history is repeating itself, yesterday it was Sykes and Picot, and today it is Lavrov and Kerry, while keeping in mind the permanent Balfour.”

The deputy also recalled that “Sykes and Picot proposed one hundred years ago the division of Turkey as well.”

“But the repressive policies adopted by the Arab nationalists and Baathists towards the Kurds are what led the situation to its current state,” he continued.

Accordingly, he called for reviewing history and the Arabization campaigns and forced displacement targeting the Kurds in Syria or Iraq, pointing out that the Syrian opposition should have agreed with the Kurds over their rights from the start to avoid being exploited by the world powers.
