REPORT: Farmers block international highway in north Lebanon

Vegetable and fruit farmers from the Akkar and Minyeh districts blocked Thursday morning the international highway linking Lebanon to Syria to protest against smuggled produce coming from Syria, which is affecting the local market.

They called on officials to stop any trucks loaded with vegetables coming from Syria from entering the country.

Last week, dozens of cattle breeders and milk producers briefly blocked the vital Ksara-Zahle highway in protest over the plunge in milk prices.

They called on the Agriculture Ministry to stop importing dairy products, namely cheese from Syria and Egypt, seemingly since they are unable to sell their products.
