Interior minister says one person arrested over vote-buying in Zahle

Interior and Municipalities Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq said Sunday that one person was arrested on charges of vote-buying in Zahle.

In a press conference held following the closure of the polls in Beirut, Bekaa, and Baalbek-Hermel, Mahsnouq said that authorities are following up on a list of individuals suspected of paying electoral bribes in some areas.

Earlier today, Mashnouq noted that “the voter turnout in the municipal elections reached 35% in Arsal, which means that the residents stick to democracy.”

The minister’s remarks came during an inspection tour of Arsal’s polling stations, where he noted that “the nomination of Ali al-Hujairi for the municipal polls is within the law.”

Separately, Mashnouq stressed that the dispute, which erupted in the city of Zahle, was under control, noting that the voter turnout is increasing across all the regions where the elections is underway.

Speaking from Baalbek, where he was inspecting the electoral process, he noted that the people’s participation in the elections is a proof of their faith in democracy, which is the only way to lead their representatives to authorities.

From Zahle’s Serail, the minister emphasized that the Security forces did not find evidence of any vote buying operations during their raids in the city.
