Italy’s President from Beirut: International community must help Lebanon over refugee crisis

Italian President Sergio Mattarella arrived in Beirut on Friday morning, on a one-day visit heading an official delegation.

The Italian President was greeted at the airport by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Samir Moqbel, the Ambassador of Italy to Lebanon, Massimo Maruti, officers of the Italian contingent operating within the UNIFIL, and embassy staff.

President Mattarella then went South on board a military helicopter belonging to the UNIFIL to check on the Italian contingent.

After returning from South Lebanon, President Mattarella praised the coexistence in Lebanon, dubbing it as "a democratic sample for the entire region."
On another note, Mattarella voiced confidence that the Lebanese people can find the appropriate solution to end the presidential vacuum in the country.
“I hope to return soon to Lebanon and meet the country’s elected president,” he added.
He also noted that the International community must help Lebanon in dealing with the refugee crisis.

Mattarella is scheduled also to meet with Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Tammam Salam in order to discuss the current situation in Lebanon and the region as well as bilateral relations.
