REPORT: Berri says next dialogue session to be held on June 21

The dialogue session was postponed until June 21, following an agreement over an agenda of items to be discussed including the initiative of Speaker Nabih Berri, on the condition to be finalized within a period of three days after the session.

In this context, sources had told LBCI that Berri presented an initiative during Wednesday’s session that includes passing a new electoral law in order to shorten the term of the current parliament, adding that in case of failure to reach a new law, the parliamentary elections will be held in accordance with the 60s law.

In addition, Berri vowed to elect a parliament speaker, a parliament’s bureau committee, and immediate presidential election and the formation of a new cabinet.

Other sources told LBCI that head of the Future bloc Fouad Siniora expressed his bloc’s objection to holding parliamentary elections prior to the presidential ones.

On another note, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, who was representing MP Michel Aoun during the session, declared that he tackled the issue of the Syrian refugees. “We agreed over rejection of resettlement of non-Lebanese, but what measures has the cabinet taken in this regard?” he asked.

This comes after a dialogue session was held today Wednesday in Ain al-Tineh, during which Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblatt and deputy Speaker Farid Makary were also absent due to travel, as well as Lebanese Democratic Party MP Talal Arslan.
