Bassil meets Swiss Foreign Affairs Minister in Beirut
Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil said on Tuesday that Lebanon abides by the dissociation policy regarding the situation in Syria, adding that the situation in the war torn country “will not lead to the return of refugees to their homelands.”
Bassil’s comments were made during a joint press conference with Swiss Foreign Affairs Minister Didier Burkhalter.

Bassil also noted that Lebanon is “counting on Switzerland to convey Lebanon’s concerns in this regard.”
For his part, Minister Burkhalter asserted that “his country fully understands Lebanon’s situation,” adding that Switzerland is not a neutral country in face of terrorism.”
“But we do not interfere in a war between two countries,” he added.
According to the United Nations, Syria's civil war has displaced over eleven million civilians since March 2011 and it has killed over 250,000 people, but the international organization stopped collecting figures in mid-2015.
Of the 4 million Syrian refugees now living across the Middle East region, Lebanon hosts more than a quarter of the total number of Syrians who have fled Syria.
The influx has caused social tension in Lebanon and put pressure on water, electricity and other services in the country.
