REPORT: Differences over electoral law obstruct joint committees’ session

The joint parliamentary committees postponed the session dedicated to discuss the draft law pertaining to the parliamentary elections until next Wednesday, after MP Ali Ammar withdrew.

In this context, MP Ali Fayyad explained that Ammar’s withdrawal is related to the agenda, adding that the electoral draft law was approached with "openness".

However, the deputy criticized describing the electoral law as a political matter, saying that the political aspect affects the bill’s objectivity.

“The discussions in this regard will continue until reaching a law that expresses the Lebanese people’s aspirations,” MP Fayyad said.

For his part, Deputy Speaker MP Farid Makary explained that agreement has been reached to not reconsider the mechanism adopted to discuss the electoral draft law.

In turn, member of the Future bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat expressed surprise over the call launched by Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah to hold dialogue, stressing that the electoral law is a political matter around the world, especially in Lebanon.

“We need to make sure that any electoral law that will be passed must guarantee fairness in representation,” he stated.

As for member of the Change and Reform bloc MP Alain Aoun, he noted that “the only solution for the electoral law issue is reaching an agreement over unified criteria, no matter the result.”

Member of the Lebanese Forces bloc MP George Adwan pointed out that returning to the 1960s voting law is considered as a crime committed against the Lebanese people.

“We are not far from the common grounds needed to reach a new law,” he noted.
