Cabinet fails to tackle Janna dam

A Cabinet meeting was held Thursday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.

Talks about a controversial dam in the Janna Valley were postponed to next Thursday.

During the meeting, the Cabinet approved to grant around 500 teachers full-time employment.

Prior to the session, Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq announced that he will call for examining and reconsidering the construction the Janna dam.

“Some environmental studies say that the site of the Janna dam is not good due to the presence of seismic fault lines,” Mashnouq disclosed.

Economy Minister Alain Hakim said that “if the construction of the dam does not have any negative impact on the environment, he will not be against it.”

Hakim pointed out, on another note, that the issue of waste sorting in Costa Brava and Bourj Hammoud landfills will be discussed during the session.

For his part, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab brought images of quarries and tree cutting to compare such damages with ones resulting from Janna dam.

“We will see whether it is a political matter or not,” he stated.

Industry Minister Hussein Hajj Hasan noted that the issue should be discussed from a scientific perspective and not political, adding that the pros of the dam are way more than its cons.

In turn, Tourism Minister Michel Faraon said that the Janna Valley is a heritage of humanity, pointing out that it should be preserved.

Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq said, “The position over the Janna dam is related to environmental matter.”
