REPORT: Consensus fails in Tripoli as low voter turnout registered
Four electoral lists were competing in the northern city of Tripoli during Sunday’s municipal polls whereby the list formed by the Future Movement and former Prime Minister Najib Mikati compete against The list of Minister of Justice Achraf Rifi.
 
Mufti of Tripoli and the North Sheikh Malek Chaar cast his vote early in the morning, voicing his hopes that a new president would be elected soon.

“The electoral process is pure democratic, and the municipalities are totally distant from the political disputes,” he added.
 

For his part, MP Mohammad Kabara said that the conciliation that took place in Tripoli serves the interests and the development in the city.

 

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Affairs Rachid Derbass said that the electoral process is happening smoothly in the city.

 
This as former MP Mosbah al-Ahdab said that the other side is not submitting any reform projects, adding that some sides wish to wage internal wars.
 
As for former Minister Faysal Karami, he noted that he voted for the ones that serve both the development and the politics in the city.
 
For his part, Minister of Justice Rifi said that nobody is entitled to dictate Tripoli’s decisions, adding that if he loses he will respect the results.
 

On another note, Minister of Interior Nouhad Machnouq paid a visit to Mufti Chaar in Tripoli, noting that the incidents linked to the municipal elections are limited.

 

He also noted that several persons were arrested in this regard.

 
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Najib Mikati, he noted that the government made an achievement by holding the municipal polls, adding that a new chapter was opened with Hariri.”

“We opened a new page with Hariri through the conciliation in Tripoli and no one can eliminate Rifi,” he added.
