REPORT: Cabinet postpones telecommunication file to upcoming session

A cabinet session convened on Thursday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.

During the session, the ministers postponed the telecommunication file to the next session.

This as Minister of Interior Nouhad Machnouq commented on Minister of Economy’s statements over the municipalities, saying that the technical team tasked with training the municipalities on treating the waste is “available.”

“We tend to use the incinerators in Beirut to treat the waste,” Machnouq added.

He also stressed that he formed a committee to inspect the pollution in the Litani River.

Prior to the session, Industry Minister Hussein al-Hajj Hassan stressed that he will raise the issue of the Litani River without being included in the agenda, noting that the river is subject to an environmental disaster and requires the funding of a national project in order to handle the case.

For his part, Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouq confirmed that the Litani project has been already referred to the Parliament and waits to be passed; adding that the budget required reaches USD one billion.

In the same context, Agriculture Minister Akram Chouhayeb pointed out that problem of the Litani River has been ongoing for several years, stressing the need to take immediate measures to resolve the issue; otherwise the residents will face a catastrophe in terms of irrigation, agriculture and state of surface water and ground water resources.
