Following his release, Yaacoub headed to the sit-in tent, where he stressed that “every hour spent by the family of Sheikh Mohammad Yaacoub on the street will be compensated.”
Yaacoub and his three bodyguards were arrested in December 2015 over their alleged involvement in the abduction of Hannibal Gaddafi, the son of late Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.
The same body released last month the three bodyguards on bail, while it rejected to set Yaacoub free.
The ex-lawmaker’s mother had gone on a hunger strike in January and his supporters held several demonstrations to protest the arrest.
Yaacoub has been hospitalized several times since his incarceration over a medical condition. His family has claimed that the former MP was being subjected to mistreatment at Roumieh Prison.
Yaacoub's father was accompanying Imam Musa Sadr and another man when they disappeared in Libya in 1978.
The Yaacoub family blames the late Gaddafi for the disappearance of their father, Sheikh Mohammad Yaacoub. However, they have continuously denied any involvement in the kidnapping of Hannibal.
