REPORT: Bassil says National Pact should be respected when electing a new president
Free Patriotic Movement leader Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil said on Tuesday that the Change and Reform bloc is adamant on naming a new Commander for the Lebanese Armed Forces.

“We support the appointment of a new army commander,” Bassil said following the bloc’s weekly meeting in Rabieh.

He also stressed that they want the election of a president “in a manner that respects the National Pact.”

“We are not clinging to General Michel Aoun as a person and we are ready to approve another candidate when people choose someone else,” Bassil added.

On another note, Bassil slammed some parties for evading “the approval of an electoral law that respects the National Pact.”

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of president Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 without the election of a successor.

Hezbollah, Aoun's Change and Reform bloc and other allies have been boycotting the electoral sessions in the parliament, blocking the needed quorum.

Future Movement leader former Prime Minister Saad Hariri launched an initiative in 2015 to nominate Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Franjieh for the presidency but his initiative was met with reservations from the main Christian parties and Hezbollah.

Supporters of Aoun's presidential bid say that he is more eligible than Franjieh to become Lebanon’s next president due to the size of his parliamentary bloc and his bigger influence among Christians.
