REPORT: Ministers agree on formation of committee for thermal treatment for Beirut's trash
A Cabinet session was held Thursday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.

Following the meeting, Information Minister Ramzi Jreij announced that the Cabinet had accepted Education Ministry’s request to task contract teachers, who teach in public schools in remote towns, with holding administrative positions.

He also said that ministers agreed on the formation of a committee tasked with studying a sustainable plan to treat the garbage.

For his part, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq pointed out that the request made by Beirut’s municipality to use thermal treatment to get rid of the capital’s accumulating waste was referred  to an ad hoc committee.

On another note, ministers did not discuss the increase of the number of secondary school teachers, seemingly since Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil did not attend today’s session.

Prior to the session, Environment Minister Mohammad al-Mashnouq said that the issue related to the waste thermal decomposition treatment remains incomplete, adding that they will discuss the concept.

In the case of secondary education, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab stressed that he will declare during the session that the sector is in need for 3 thousand teachers, in accordance with the requirements for the year 2016.

He also warned against complete vacuum in case the cabinet fails to reach an agreement over the solution package.

On another note, Agriculture Minister Akram Chouhayeb mentioned the struggles faced by apple farmers, stressing that he deploy efforts to help them as well as poultry farmers who also have the right to be compensated.

In turn, Tourism Minister Michel Faraon announced that he will propose delaying the start of the school year until after al-Adha holiday so that the tourism season can be prolonged.
