Minister of Labor Sajaan Azzi: No new army commander should be elected amid presidential vacuum
Minister of Labor Sajaan Azzi said on Sunday that no new army commander should be elected amid the presidential vacuum.

Azszi’s comments were made during an interview with Nharkom Said TV the required constitutional quorum is reached.”

He also voiced hopes that the Free Patriotic Movement’s ministers would withdraw their boycott and attend the cabinet’s sessions.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, who is also head of the FPM, declared that the party’s ministers will boycott the Cabinet session to express their objection to the extension of senior military chiefs’ mandates.

Last week, Defense Minister Samir Moqbel extended the term of Major General Mohammad Kheir, the secretary-general of the Higher Defense Council, by one year, despite FPM ministers’ opposition during last week’s Cabinet session.
Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of president Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 without the election of a successor.

Deep disputes between rival political parties have thwarted the elections.
