REPORT: Heavy battles in Aleppo destroy industrial park
More than 600 factories and 250 stores have been damaged in Alleramoon industrial park in Syria's northern city of Aleppo since fierce battles between the government and rebel factions engulfed the city in 2012.

Aleppo, once Syria's commercial and industrial hub, was occupied by rebels in October 2012.

The Syrian army broke the siege of the rebels late this July and drove them out from the northern part of the city where the industrial park is located.

Kaldoun Soukar, owner of a fabric factory in the industrial park, returned to the factory recently when the situation became stable in the area.

“We were evacuated on October 23, 2012. At that time, we hoped the violence could end as soon as possible and hoped we could return to the factory several days later.

However, several days turned into four years. We returned here four years later and found everything has been damaged or taken away” said Kaldoun Soukar.
The workshop where 50 textile machines were once placed now becomes empty but debris after conflicts.

“They looted the machines not for use. They removed the brass, copper and aluminum from the machines, took away portable textile machines, finished products and fabric easy to carry. They took all of them and destroyed what was left. Now the factory cannot work at all,” said Soukar.

In addition to the machines and products, all the workers of the factory have fled Syria.

More than 600 factories and 250 stores in the industrial park have suffered great damages, with losses estimated to be 10 million U.S. dollars.

According to Soukar, the Chamber of Commerce of Aleppo has a plan to reconstruct the Alleramoon industrial park, however, lack of financial support and ongoing violence make the plan remain pending.
