REPORT: Assir trial deferred until October 18
The Military Tribunal adjourned Tuesday the trial of notorious Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir to October 18.

Meanwhile, the families of soldiers martyred during the June 2013 Abra clashes blocked the road outside the Military Court to protest the ongoing postponement of Assir’s trials.

The soldiers’ relatives demanded a meeting with the head of the Military Tribunal Judge Khalil Ibrahim to discuss ways to avoid the adjournment of trials.

Assir is a radical anti-Hezbollah preacher who led clashes against the Lebanese Army in June 2013 in south Lebanon’s Abra.

The clashes resulted in the deaths of 19 army soldiers and at least 40 of combatants fighting for Assir.

He was arrested by the Lebanese authorities in August 2015 at the Beirut Airport after being on the run for over two years.

Since then, his trial has been adjourned several times.
