Geagea calls on Syria to hand over officers accused of carrying out Tripoli bombings

Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea said on Tuesday that the government should call on the Syrian authorities to hand over the two officers who were accused of carrying out the al-Taqwa and al-Salam bombings.

“Should Syria refuses to extradite them, the government must expel the Syrian ambassador to Lebanon and recall Lebanon’s representative in Damascus back to the country,” Geagea said in a statement.

In the same context, the LF chief noted that “the Tripoli bombing crime was not an ordinary one, but an act of terror that killed more than 40 innocent worshipers."

“It is shameful for the government not to take action on such a terrible crime,” he added.

On August 23, 2013, two car bombs detonated outside the al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques in Tripoli at around the same time.

At least 42 people were killed, and more than 400 wounded in the attacks.

Last week, Military Investigative Judge Alaa Khatib indicted Syrian intelligence officers Mohammad Ali Ali from the "Palestine Branch" and Nasser Joubeen from the "Political Security Directorate" over the bombings.

The indictment said that investigations indicated that the orders to detonate bombs outside the Tripoli mosques had originated from a high-level security agency “located in the Syrian intelligence."
