REPORT: Yazidi survivor becomes UN goodwill ambassador

A young Yazidi woman who survived IS sex slavery and human trafficking was appointed UN ambassador.

Nadia Murad, who is also a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will become the UNODC Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

Her "appointment marks the first time a survivor of atrocities is bestowed with this distinction," a statement by the UN said.

The 23-year-old was captured in Iraq in 2014 and subjected to sexual and physical abuse after being sold as a slave several times but eventually managed to flee. Six of her brothers were murdered.

Since her escape, she has been advocating for the end of human trafficking.
