REPORT: Supercars gather for first edition of Beirut Grand Prix
Thousands of supercar fans gathered in the Lebanese capital to watch drag racing and drifting at the first edition of the Beirut Grand Prix.

The two-day event is aimed at bringing together the region's supercar owners and admirers whilst boosting tourism in Lebanon, said the event's founder.

"About the event, it is a car race. Today will be some drag racing and drifting with entertainment, and tomorrow on Sunday the race will start from Ramleh el Baydah passing by Rawche Manara and Ain el Mreisseh all these roads," said Hussein Fawaz, CEO of founder of Beirut Grand Prix, on the first day of the event.

"I want to bring people who have supercarsfrom Turkey, Russia and the Gulf Area to Lebanon to compete here, because this is an event that is still absent in the Middle East. It is present in Monaco or perhaps Macau, also in America they do it rarely. This is a big thing that I want to create in Lebanon, for anyone who owns these types of vehicles to come here and compete with us, check out our restaurants and hotels because we are a civilized country," he said, adding that the event took more than a year to prepare and required many licenses and approvals.

The event was open to both professional and amateur racers and drifters, and anyone owning a super car could apply to compete in the race.

Saudi professional drifter, Falah Al-Jarba, was part of the competition and said for him the most important thing was to have fun and for the people to enjoy the show.

"This is a gentleman race, it is a race for the audience, it's a supercar show, even though there is winning and losing. But the real winning is to come back home safely with or without a trophy, that is winning, no material loss, and no injuries but for the audience and the people to enjoy the show," said Al-Jarba.

The winner of the first edition of Beirut Grand Prix was Mohammed Oraibi with his Audi R8, beating the second place driver by merely one second on the clock.
