REPORT: Public drivers protest inspection fee hike

The Union and Leagues of Land Transport carried out Wednesday a sit-in outside all automotive inspection centers across the country, calling for a freeze on automotive fees.

A protest held before the Mechanical Inspection Authority in Dekweneh area caused a traffic jam, leaving hundreds of commuters stuck in traffic.

Public drivers also protested in front of traffic and vehicles management authority centers in the eastern city of Zahle, the northern district of Zgharta and the southern town of Zahrani.

They voiced their rejection of the increase in fees for automotive inspections.

In the same regard, citizens were unable to inspect their vehicles in the Motor Inspection Center in Hadath after protesters shut down all the main doors leading to it.

Head of the public transportation drivers unions Abdel-Amir Najdeh said, "We will keep the protest ongoing until our demands are met, " calling for an emergency session to take place next Monday to agree on their next steps.
For his part, chief of the Union and Leagues of Land Transport Bassam Tleis announced that a demonstration will be held before the Interior Ministry the following Thursday.
