The Cabinet agreed Thursday to compensate farmers with LL5000 ($3.33) for every box of apples weighing 20 kg.
Fouad Ayoub was appointed as President of the Lebanese University and Abdallah Ahmad as General Director of the Social Affairs Ministry, during a session held at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
The ministers also discussed the appointment of Major General Hatem Malak as acting Army Chief of Staff by Defense Minister Samir Moqbel last week.
During the session, a dispute erupted between ministers over the appointment of officials, prompting PM Salam to briefly halt the meeting.
Energy Minister Arthur Nazarian and Education Minister Elias Bou Saab, who belong to the Free Patriotic Movement, attended today’s session.
Prior to the meeting, Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass said “some appointment might take place during the session, but not on a wide scale,” hoping that all the ministers will attend.
For his part, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq ruled out any consensus over decisions concerning major issues, including the security appointments.
In turn, State Minister for Administrative Development Affairs Mohammad Fneish explained that Hezbollah decided to attend the Cabinet session to avoid obstruction, stressing the need to refrain from approving major and disputed items.
On another note, Culture Minister Rony Araiji pointed out that the Marada Movement has not been informed of any news regarding the issue of the presidency.
