The port of Tripoli has become the center in Syria’s reconstruction process, being the closest to the Lebanese-Syrian borders. This is why all eyes are on the north.
In fact, the Tripoli port is distinguished by many features including a 15-meter deep sidewalk capable of to receiving enormous ships, a large background area of 1.5 million square meters, representing the port and the economic zone, as well as an indirect background area which is the Akkar valley adequate to establish dry ports for temporary storage for goods to be later transported to Syria.
For these reason sources claim that disagreements are taking place over this port, noting that clashes between Future Movement Secretary Ahmad Hariri and MP Mohammad Qabbani are part of these disagreements. However, Qabbani insists on expressing reservations and declining to comment especially over rumors of smuggling operations taking place.
Sources told LBCI that the situation is under control due to patrols lead by both UNIFIL and the Lebanese army under UN resolution 1701, in addition to security procedures at the port.
