The Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE) issued its report on the 2016 municipal elections from a gender perspective.
According to the report, three reasons led the Lebanese women to run for the municipal elections in 2016:
A desire for change
The impact of the civil society movements
Experience in the field of development
Female voters represent 51% of the total numbers of voters.
The results where women won the elections did not see a significant progress since 2005, as 680 female candidate won in 2016, which makes 5.6%.
The pressures faced by these women were not mentioned by the media. These pressures were financial, or imposed by the candidates’ families, society, parties or clergy men.
