[VIDEO] Kanaan says any talk of a possible delay of election session is behind us
Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Tuesday that the “current presidential course that has originated from national agreements based on Muslim-Christian partnership is an implementation of the National Pact in a manner that that rejects the approach of bilateral or tripartite agreements.”

Kanaan’s comments were made following the bloc’s weekly meeting in Rabieh.

He also said that “in light of the current national agreements, the bloc will participate in the October 31 session to put the broad national agreements into effect.”

“Any talk of a possible delay of the election session has become behind us seeing as most parties have confirmed that they would attend the session,” he concluded by stressing.

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun Aoun is expected to become Lebanon’s next president after Future Movement leader former Prime Minister Saad Hariri formally endorsed him on Thursday.

Speaker Nabih Berri has expressed concerns over the Aoun-Hariri agreements, declaring that his bloc will “vote against Aoun” and that it might “join the ranks of the opposition.”

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 without the election of a successor.

Hezbollah, Aoun's Change and Reform bloc and some of their allies have been boycotting the parliament's electoral sessions, stripping them of the needed quorum.

Hariri launched an initiative in late 2015 to nominate Hezbollah’s ally Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Frangieh for the presidency. However, his suggestion was met with reservations from the country's main Christian parties as well as Hezbollah.

The supporters of Aoun's presidential bid say that he is more eligible than Frangieh to become Lebanon’s next president due to the size of his parliamentary bloc and his bigger influence in the Christian community.
