Frangieh says he will not withdraw his candidacy for presidency
Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Frangieh said on Wednesday that he will not withdraw his candidacy for the presidency.

Frangieh’s comments were made to reporters following his visit to Bkerke where he met with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai.

He also noted that talks with Rai were “excellent,” adding that such a meeting comes as a natural move prior to the election session set for October 31.

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun Aoun is expected to become Lebanon’s next president after Future Movement leader former Prime Minister Saad Hariri formally endorsed him on Thursday.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 without the election of a successor.

Hariri launched an initiative in late 2015 to nominate Hezbollah’s ally Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Frangieh for the presidency. However, his suggestion was met with reservations from the country's main Christian parties as well as Hezbollah.

The supporters of Aoun's presidential bid say that he is more eligible than Frangieh to become Lebanon’s next president due to the size of his parliamentary bloc and his bigger influence in the Christian community.
