REPORT: Founder of Lebanese group for disappeared, Ghazi Aad, passes away

Lebanon Wednesday mourned the death of Ghazi Aad, founder of the Support of Lebanese in Detention and Exile group (SOLIDE).

As news spread on social media platforms reporting his death, many Lebanese people offered condolences, recalling his struggles in the case of the Lebanese detained and kidnapped in Syria.

In this context, President Michel Aoun mourned Aad's death, saying that “Ghazi Aad might have gone physically, but he will remain present in defending human rights and his fight for every disappeared person.”

In turn, Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil tweeted a eulogy, whereby he said “Ghazi Aad, your case will not die, it will be our case,” adding that uncovering the fate of the disappeared will remain a major priority.

For their part, Lebanese Forces party chief Samir Geagea and Caretaker Economy Minister Alain Hakim also mourned Aad’s death via Twitter.

Aad was hospitalized in late October and had been in a coma up until his death earlier this morning.

Thousands of people went missing during the 1975-1990 Civil War, many of whom are believed to be imprisoned in Syria, while others are likely buried in mass graves throughout Lebanon.
