ABAAD Association stages sit-in against controversial rape law

A number of women from ABBAD Association staged Tuesday a sit-in in Riad Soleh square to call for the abolition of Article 522 of the Lebanese Penal Code, which suggests that that a rapist can be exonerated from his horrendous crime if he decides to marry his victim.

This comes one day before the Justice and Administration Committee is set to declared its decision on the request the abolish the said article.

In this context, sources said that a number of deputies members of the committee proposed to amend the article rather than abolishing it.

The amendment suggests that a rapist will not be exonerated from his crime if his victim is under 15 years old, but a marriage can acquit him if his victim under 15 years old and above.
