President Michel Aoun received Saturday the Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran Alaeddin Boroujerdi, heading a delegation.
Boroujerdi discussed the Iranian position from the regional developments in general and the Syrian situation in particular, in addition to the efforts exerted in a bid to reach a political solution for the Syrian crisis based on dialogue between the rival parties.
Aoun sent his greetings to his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, stressing that the situation returned to normal in Lebanon following the presidential elections and adding that the agreement between the Lebanese factions will lead to further prosperity and tranquility, especially that the dialogue approach adopted aims at converging different points of view over issues at hand.
Aoun also hoped that the efforts deployed to end the Syrian crisis through a political solution will be fruitful, “which would lead to a potential solution for issue of the Syrian refugees, whose number has reached nearly half of the Lebanese population, a state that negatively affects the economic and security situations in Lebanon.”
On another note, the president stressed the need to join the efforts in fighting terrorism, praising the success of the preemptive operations carried out by the Lebanese military and security forces.
Afterwards, Boroujerdi headed to Ain al-Tineh where he met with Speaker Nabih Berri.
Following the meeting, the Iranian official said that “they are counting on the new era to bring new accomplishments for the Lebanese people in various sectors and fields,” expressing appreciation for Berri’s role in ending the presidential vacuum.
“The solution in Syria must be political and a dialogue between the Syrian rival parties is the best solution to end the crisis,” he added.
Boroujerdi had met with Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah Friday evening in the presence of the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Mr. Mohammad Fathali.
During the meeting, discussions tackled the latest political developments in the region, in accordance with the media relations of the Shiite party.
The Iranian official is expected to meet with Prime Minister Saad Hariri later today at Beit al-Wasat.
