REPORT: Syrian students show war-time necessity can be mother of invention
Gloves that transform sign language into words and lights powered by the warmth of a hand - just some of the items on display at a Syrian exhibit for young inventors.

Hundreds of visitors buzzed around the Mechanical and Electronic Exhibition in the city of Latakia, to see what the student inventors had come up with.

The ongoing civil war is not far from students' minds, and many of the inventions are a response to needs created as a result of the six-year-old crisis.

Student Hala Issa wanted to see if she could provide locally-made mechanical heart valves so doctors would no longer have to import the expensive items from abroad.

Another student, Yazan Habib, showed off a model aircraft equipped with a spy-cam that could have military or civilian applications.

One student inventor wanted a solution to the constant power cuts, so he developed a machine that uses heat to power lights.

The students say they developed their creations on their own, with no support or funding from any organization or governmental entity.

The war in Syria began six years ago with protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government.

It has since dragged in global and regional powers, allowed Islamic State to grab huge tracts of territory and caused the biggest refugee crisis since the second world war.
