REPORT: Who can resolve the issue of quarries and crushers in Lebanon?

The situation of quarries and crushers in Lebanon can be described with two words: Chaos and ‘clientelism.’

It is chaos because Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq was issued the decision last week to close the sand quarries and crushers for one month, is the same minister who allowed, two month ago, these establishments to work every Monday and Thursday of every week.

It is steeped in ‘clientelism’ because all quarries and crushes spread across the Lebanese regions, from north to south, through Mount Lebanon and the Bekaa, are owned by politicians or their supporters who have obtained full coverage to pursue their work.
