French troops fire on suspected Islamists in Mali town of Gao
    
French troops in armored vehicles opened fire on suspected Islamists in the northern Malian town of Gao, a Reuters witness said.
   
The witness said French troops in at least three armored vehicles were deployed in Gao's Independence Square and fired with heavy machine-guns at the mayor's office, where Islamist rebels were holed up.

Earlier, car bomb exploded in the northern Malian town of Kidal, a local journalist and a French defense ministry source in Paris said on Thursday.    

The journalist in Kidal said a land cruiser four-wheel drive vehicle had exploded in a courtyard in an outlying neighborhood. He said one person was killed and another wounded.
