Washington rejects calls for a ceasefire in Gaza because it would benefit Hamas

The United States warned on Monday that any Israeli ceasefire in the Gaza Strip would benefit the Hamas movement, as the European Union is considering calling for a humanitarian truce in the sector subjected to intense Israeli bombardment.
The spokesperson for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, told reporters that a ceasefire would "give Hamas the ability to rest, recover, and prepare to continue launching terrorist attacks against Israel.
