Two individuals were killed and dozens injured in religiously driven confrontations in northern India, which erupted after the demolition of an Islamic school and a nearby mosque, according to officials on Friday.

Vandana Singh, an official in the Haldwani district of the Uttarakhand state where the violence erupted Thursday night, confirmed the casualty toll, noting that security forces had been ordered to "shoot rioters."
