REPORT: Aoun: I do not want 1960s law, but do I leave the Republic in vacuum?

President Michel Aoun said Tuesday that the Constitution stipulates that when the mandate of the Parliament ends without a new electoral law passed, the people must be called to vote within a period of 90 days in accordance with the existing law.

Addressing a delegation from the Press Club, Aoun said: “I do not want the 1960s law, but if we fail to reach a solution, should I leave the republic to collapse? The people must vote as they wish.”

He added that extending the term of the parliament is a blatant violation of the constitution, which has items that must be respected.

On another note, the president said that the statement of the foreign minister regarding Lebanon’s position over the Riyadh declaration is 100 percent correct.
