Ten associations in Lebanon presented in 2016 a proposal pertaining to the amendment of the Lebanese drugs law issued in 1998 and that has not yet been amended, despite the development of the treatments provided for the drug addicts.
The proposal focused on four main items:
- The treatments stipulated in the law
- Institutional framework for the application of the principle of treatment as an alternative to prosecution
- Punishable acts and punishments pursuant to principles appropriate to the penalty with the seriousness of the offense
- Maintaining confidentiality of the addict in order to facilitate his social reintegration
Several items were reviewed and amended, and the proposal is set to be discussed by the human rights parliamentary committee on Tuesday May 30.
