REPORT: Alarming figures on drug abuse and trafficking
The 26th of June of every year marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking; however, with all the efforts and campaigns, the figures remain alarming in terms of drug dealing and abusing, mainly among the youth.
 
Oum El-Nour, Lebanon’s largest center for rehabilitation and drug prevention aiming at helping addicts, documented 452 cases admitted to the center, 11% of whom are minors.
 
The higher rate, which reached 31%, is registered among those aged between 20 and 40 years.​
 
The statistics also revealed that 72% of addicts are unmarried.​ As drug abuse cause many diseases, the most prominent among which are mental illnesses, reaching a rate of 84.3%, negatively affecting the individual, the family and community. ​
