Salam: Government decided to keep subsidizing bread
Caretaker Minister of Economy Amine Salam met on Friday in his office with a delegation of bakeries owners to discuss the latest developments in the wheat and bread crisis.

"The state has sought to secure funds for subsidies and open credit lines, despite the fact that we are in a country that is unable to provide subsidies, but we have decided to continue subsidizing bread," Salam explained.

"Mill dealers were concerned because of the scarcity of funds and the possibility of not securing them," Salam explained. "We will follow up with the Banque du Liban to open the credit lines."

"No one says, 'Let us lift subsidies,' because this is a decision made by the state in collaboration with ministers, not unions." "Today, I cannot put Lebanon in jeopardy in the midst of a global wheat crisis," he continued.

Salam stated that the government has decided to keep subsidizing bread because "it is the last resort for citizens due to the high rate of poverty.”
