Kataeb party Chief MP Samy Gemayel said that, according to a study conducted by the American University in Beirut, the taxes that were passed during Wednesday’s legislative session will lead to a decrease in the purchasing power of the Lebanese citizen by 10 to 20%.
In a press conference, Gemayel urged President Michel Aoun to return to the tax raise law to the parliament for review, emphasizing that by doing so the president would have saved the poor and middle classes in Lebanon, as well as the economic situation.
In this context, the MP expressed fear over the possibility that the goal behind the taxes would be to fill the state’s treasury in order to fund the electoral campaigns.
“The first step would be to call for returning the law before resorting to filing an appeal against it,” he explained.
