UNHCR Representative in Lebanon Mireille Girard revealed Sunday that 88% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon want to return to their country.
"The reason for making the refugees wait is not related to the political settlement or reconstruction of Syria, but it is about practical obstacles, including fears related to their properties, identity papers and legal status in their homeland," Gerard explained.
During a statement at a round table organized by the 'Idrak' Association, she noted that the displacement crisis was the result of armed conflict, persecution and disasters that put families and communities under considerable social and psychological pressure.
The seminar tackled the conditions of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon from different angles, including mental health, as well as means to improve the quality of their life and the effect of this improvement on the Lebanese community and the refugees’ intention to return to their home country.
