US ambassador Shea: New sanctions to enter into force as of June 1st
US ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea asserted on Sunday that "there is no economic or financial blockade of Lebanon."
Shea’s comments were made during an interview with OTV channel whereby she said that the US sanctions that target “the terrorist organisations and those who support them financially do not deprive Lebanon of trade and investment.”
"There will also be sanctions that will affect those involved in corruption," Shea said, explaining that these sanctions “do not allow these destructive sides to infiltrate in the financial system.”
The ambassador also noted that "the sanctions target Hezbollah,” adding that they may also include those who help and support Hezbollah.
“There will also be a new category of sanctions that will enter into force as of June 1st and will affect the killers of civilians in Syria. There may be some parties here involved in these sanctions also,” she added.
On another note, Shea stressed that appointments at the Central Bank is a decision that belongs to the Lebanese government, asserting that the United States “has always worked closely with the Central Bank’s Governor Riyad Salameh over the years and garners the great confidence of the international financial community.”
