EU Delegation to Lebanon calls for bringing Slim’s killers to justice

The EU Delegation to Lebanon and the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States issued on Friday a statement in which they expressed “their extreme shock and sadness over the assassination of prominent intellectual and political activist Mr. Lokman Slim who was found killed in south Lebanon on February 4, 2021.”

 

The statement called on the Lebanese authorities to start immediate investigations and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

 

“The tragic day marks the six-month anniversary of the Beirut port blast that took place on August 4, 2020, the Lebanese people deserves to know what happened six months ago, and deserves the swift justice and accountability as we will continue calling on the Lebanese authorities to uphold their commitment in carrying out an investigation that is impartial, reliable, transparent and independent," the statement went on by saying.

 

This as the EU reiterated its focus on the dire need “to build a state and enhancing the state’s institutions to guarantee the independence of the judiciary, to safeguard the respect for the rule of law, and to meet the legitimate aspirations peacefully expressed by the people in Lebanon.”

 

The EU also stressed that it will continue supporting “those who defend basic democratic values and human rights.”

 

The statement concluded by expressing sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Lokman Slim and his loved ones.
