President Aoun welcomes Pope’s visit to Iraq
President Michel Aoun welcomed on Friday Pope Francis who is paying a visit to Baghdad, saying: "Welcome to His Holiness Pope Francis in the land of the Levant, the land that has always been the home of civilizations, religions and cultures."

"We all hope that His Holiness’s visit to Mesopotamia will push toward the establishment of a real peace that the people of Iraq needs as well as all the peoples of the region," Aoun said in a tweet.

For his part, Prime minister-designate Saad Hariri said in a tweet that “the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Iraq is historic in all its spiritual, cultural and human dimensions, and a message to the whole region regarding the importance of interfaith dialogue and the protection of Muslim-Christian coexistence. We aspire to meeting the Pope on the land of Lebanon.”
